Main areas of work:

Professor Steinwachs has spent many years in research and development work in cartilage and meniscus regeneration as well as tissue engineering, which makes him one of the few international specialists in orthobiology. These procedures repair cartilage damage with endogenous cells, avoiding the need for joint replacements, and use, among other things, autologous chondrocyte transplantation (ACT), osteochondral transplantation and stem cells. The Professor’s other main areas include the surgical treatment of cruciate ligament injuries, meniscus damage and bone disorders. The latest conservative and surgical treatments are used in combination with tried and tested techniques.

Cartilage:
autologous chondrocyte transplantation (ACT), osteochondral transplantation, periosteal flap reconstruction, membrane or cartilage repair using periosteum, stem cell procedures, microfractures, K-wire drilling.

Bones: bone smoothing, bone abrasion, bone curettage, bone grafting, cancellous bone repair, cartilage-bone transplantation, bone drilling, bone cyst curettage and filling.

Bone malformations: corrective osteotomies in the thigh and lower leg, using internal fixation.

Meniscus: meniscus refixation, partial resections, meniscus stimulation (needling, trimming, fibrin patch), meniscus transplantation (Collagen Meniskus Implant®, ACTIFIT®).

Cruciate ligament injuries:
reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament with patellar tendon or semitendinosus / gracilis repair, fixation near the joint by absorbable interference screws, surgical treatment of loosened, partly torn or elongated cruciate ligaments, Soft Healing Response Technique according to Steadman.
