Spinal anesthesia is an elegant procedure by which a local anesthetic is injected into the lower spine at the site where the nerves from the leg enter the spinal marrow. This blocks the sensation of pain in the legs and hips. The advantage compared with general anesthesia is that the organs and cardiovascular system are not put under strain as a result of narcotic drugs and artificial respiration is not necessary. Patients may also be sedated if required before the spinal anesthesia is administered.
