Impingement

Patients suffering from femoroacetabular impingement can experience pain even with the simplest movements, e.g. putting on shoes or getting into a car.

The reason is undesired contact between the acetabular margin and the neck or head of the femur (see illustration) .

The impingement can be caused by a pathologically enlarged acetabular margin, which can be caused by a variety of factors, or through genetic predisposition. When the hip moves, the enlarged acetabular margin can quickly cause discomfort. Bony deposits between the femoral head and neck that develop with time cause painful contact with the acetabular margin or labrum when the hip moves.

Early treatment is vital!

As the permanent contact at the acetabular margin can lead to massive damage to the joint, early treatment is vital. If left, the condition can lead to arthrosis of the hip, which can be treated adequately only with a prosthesis.

The therapy of choice in most cases  is a surgical intervention in the form of minimally invasive arthroscopy, which does not leave a large scar. Bony structures responsible for the impingement and secondary cartilage and/or labrum damage can usually be removed without difficulty.
