Labrum defect

The acetabular margin has a fibrocartilaginous lip (labrum). Damage to this structure is known as a labrum defect. It can be caused by an accident such as fall on the hip or by misalignment, which with time produces wear on the labrum, or femoroacetabular impingement.

What are the symptoms of a labrum defect?

A labrum defect is usually accompanied by manifest pain in the groin and/or lateral hip region, which can become worse when bending or rotating the leg inwards.

How can a labrum defect be detected?

Labrum defects can be detected by MRT or by arthroscopy, which permits an exact appraisal of the labrum.

How can a labrum defect be treated?

In most cases painful labrum defects can be treated only by surgery. Today, however, major invasive surgery is no longer necessary. Most defects can be treated by arthroscopy, which does not leave a large scar. During this procedure, the damaged labrum is removed to prevent joint damage in the form of arthrosis. The torn labrum can also be sewn to restore the mechanical function and the supply of nutrition to the cartilage.
