Frozen Shoulder

There are typically three stages in frozen shoulder.

  1. In the “freezing” or painful phase, there are often sudden attacks of violent pain (especially at night or at rest). These are accompanied by an increasing limitation of movement, which markedly increases, either slowly or sometimes even “overnight”.
  2. After a few weeks or months, there follows the “frozen” or stiff phase in which there is no further limitation of function and the pain gradually decreases.
  3. In the last stage, the “thawing” or recovery phase, there is practically no more pain and the shoulder function increasingly returns.

What treatments are helpful?

Frozen shoulder can now usually be treated successfully. Although there is almost no chance of stopping the process of contraction in the freezing phase, the pain can often be markedly reduced in this phase with professional analgesic treatment.

Other treatments are only successful from the stiff phase onward. If there is also an accompanying problem such as a mechanical impingement syndrome, early arthroscopic therapy can often markedly improve mobility and thus create the conditions for expert physiotherapy.

Depending on the clinical picture, a purely conservative treatment can also be worthwhile, combining intensive manual therapy with injections (anti-inflammatory substances) into, for instance, the subacromial space.
