[more]Today, arthroscopy is of high significance in shoulder problems. On the one hand, it enables the joint to be viewed in detail from the inside by means of a mini video camera and an accurate check to be made of the previously established diagnosis. On the other, many injuries can be conservatively treated by means of arthroscopic interventions, since only small holes need to be made in the skin or joint capsule. Large scars, which are common in open surgery, belong to the past.
Well-performed shoulder arthroscopies require the operator to have a high level of expertise and experience in the area of shoulder diseases, which is found above all in doctors at specialized centers for the shoulders. Tip: Before having shoulder arthroscopy, find out how many procedures of this type are performed yearly by your doctor.
Arthroscopy can be useful in many types of shoulder problems, for example, in calcific tendinitis, impingement problems, tears in the rotator cuff, shoulder instability, frozen shoulder and also in the early stages of shoulder arthrosis.
The shoulder arthroscopy itself is performed under anesthesia and thus does not cause pain. There is also little or no pain after the procedure since large cuts, as used in open surgery of the shoulder, are not required. Thus, weight can be put on the joint very early. The scars are barely visible. Nearly all shoulder arthroscopy procedures can be performed on a short-stay basis.
